Google Pixel phones are now being upgraded to July 2020 update with various new functional changes, bug-fixes and other tweaks. In efforts to improve security on Android, Google has a monthly security definitions update schedule. After 30 days, the brand releases improvements that improve security. Using this monthly commitment as an oppurtunity, the brand releases new firmwares for its Pixel phones that not only ship with the latest security patch — in this case, July 2020 update — but also some feature enhancements, tweaks and overall refinements.
Google’s upcoming Android 11 reached public Beta stage last month but since the software isn’t on the stable channel, latest July 2020 update comes based on Android 10. For feature changes, July 2020 update should address any existing bugs or glitches while improving on reliability, performance and obviously, security. The update is compatible on Google Pixel 2, 2 XL, 3, 3 XL, 3a, 3a XL, 4 and 4 XL. If your device is in this list and hasn’t received the update notification, you can download July 2020 update factory images from ahead.
Google Pixel Security Bulletin – July 2020 Update
July 2020 update arrives on the same set of phones as the last June 2020 build. No new device has been dropped from support. Further, the update is available simultaneously for all compatible devices.
Prior to making these images available for manual download, Google starts pushing them directly through their update servers to compatible devices. We did see Check for Update functionality, which is built-in to the Android system, being fixed in the previous build so hopefully, it wont be causing any problems this time around. To check for an available update, go to Settings > System > System update > Check for update.
Like we discussed, using the monthly security patch commitment as an opportunity, Google releases new firmware files that are packed with additional changes rather than just new security definitions.
For now, Google hasn’t released functional patch notes. As soon as they are announced, we will update this article!
