If you don’t know what bootloader is then here is a brief overview: A Bootloader is a code which runs as we turn on our device. This code initializes as well as loads the kernel and ramdisk, and gets the boot process going. This complete process is known as Bootloader. Every Android smartphone comes with one and usually, manufacturers lock it for security reasons. However, for the advanced user, there is an option available for unlocking. So if you want to try any custom ROM, it is difficult to load it without unlocking the bootloader first. Thankfully, Sony supports Xperia XZ3 to run an unlocked bootloader and with the guide ahead, your device can easily be unlocked as well.
It’s important to mention: this process will erase all of your data. So if you have any photos or other files on your phone that you want to keep, transfer them to your computer now. In addition, if you have any app settings you want to keep, use their backup function to create a backup settings file, and transfer those to your computer as well.

How to Unlock Bootloader on Sony Xperia XZ3
Before we begin, it is better to know that unlocking bootloader of XZ3 requires unlock code. To get the code follow the steps below:
Step 1 – First go to the Sony’s official website here.
Step 2 – Now select the XZ3 from the dropdown menu
Step 3 – Enter the IMEI and Email address on the give fields.
Step 4 – After submitting, you will get unlock code.
Step 5 – First Go into Settings > About phone and tap seven times on Build number to enable developer options.
Step 6 – From Settings, go into Developer options and enable OEM unlocking. To do this, make sure your device is updated to the latest software.
Step 7 – It is only possible to unlock the bootloader for certain releases. To check if it is possible to unlock the bootloader of your device.
- In your device, open the dialer and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.
- Tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.
Step 8 – Download the Drivers INF file which will be used later.
Download INF File: Xperia-XZ3-Driver.zip
Step 9 – Now download ADB / Fastboot tools and set them up on your computer.
Step 10 – On your device, turn on USB debugging by going to Settings > Developer options and click to enable USB debugging.
Step 11 – Turn off your device and connect a USB-cable to your computer.
Step 12 – On your device, press the Fastboot key (Volume up for most devices) at the same time as you connect the other end of the USB-cable.
Step 13 – You need to install the Fastboot driver manually first. To do this, once your device is connected, open Device Manager and find the device with an exclamation mark shown under Other Devices category. Right click on it and select update driver. You will be asked to browse to the driver hence guide it to the driver you previously extracted in Step 6.
Step 14 – When your device is connected, open a command window on your computer and go to the platform-tools folder within the Android SDK folder.
Step 15 – Enter the following command and Verify that you get an answer back without any errors.
Step 16 – If you still want to unlock the bootloader of your device, enter the following command which includes the unlock code that you got earlier.
fastboot -i 0x0fce oem unlock 0x<insert your unlock code>
Step 17 – Verify that you get an answer back without any errors.
