What is Recovery Mode?

Recovery mode is a built-in feature with Android OS. Phones which don’t have a recovery are bound by their respective manufacturers rather than Android itself. The thing which varies from device to device, is the method you use to gain access to the recovery.

Features at your disposal once you enter the recovery mode include the ability to apply an update. Usually this is done when you have access to the official update ZIP from Huawei. This method doesn’t void warranty and is itself used by Huawei. If you  have applied an OTA(Over-the-air) update on your phone, you’ll notice your phone rebooting into a screen where an Android figure is shown with a progress bar. This is the recovery.

After that, you can select to wipe either your cache partition or perform a full factory reset. Cache partition format allows for all the cache and temporary files to be deleted. Oppositely, Factory reset deletes everything except the basic system. This includes your user data and cache. You would be using either of these if your phone is stuck while booting or you are experiencing slow downs and app crashes.

We’ll also like to warn the dangers of recovery after you have read the benefits. Wrong use of recovery can potentially end up in loss of whole device or a corrupt system. Don’t worry the probability of this is very less as there are protective measures in place. Every file is first verified before proceeding the task and confirmation is taken once you select a task.

Custom recoveries are also very similar to the stock one. These recoveries include popular flavors such as CWM (ClockWorkMOD) and TWRP (TeamWinRecoveryProject). Accessing a custom recovery is same as accessing the stock one. Features you get with the custom variant is the ability to flash ZIPs (Custom ROMs and Themes), wipe certain partitions rather than cache and rest only, make system backups and more.
