Thankfully, developer dees_troy has managed to patch in the functionality in latest TWRP 3.2.3-1 release. This means, this new version is now fully compatible with Android 9.0 Pie and should work on Pixel devices. dees_troy also remarked that if the new Pixel 3 is based on same software as Pixel 2, this revision should work perfectly fine with that as well.
