This guide is for those who want to know how to enter the Download / Fastboot Mode on Nokia 8. HMD Global’s first attempt at a high end phone after conquering the budget sector comes in the form of Nokia 8. The hardware is quite amazing along with the features but as with all Android phones, you can do much more by customizing and modifying. In this guide, we will show you how you can get to the Fastboot mode. The Fastboot Mode, which is also known as, Download Mode, is used to flash custom recovery images, system software and even official firmware. Just by accessing this mode, you don’t void the warranty. But of you perform a function like unlocking the bootloader, that will definitely void warranty. Read ahead to find out how you can access this mode. All of the steps required to enter Download / Fastboot Mode on your Nokia 8 are detailed below.
You would need fastboot mode when you decide to install a custom ROM, custom recovery or even official firmware. The process itself is quite simple but as with different manufacturers, the process changes slightly. In our tutorial, we would be needing a computer connection for this process hence you need to make sure you have proper Nokia 8 USB drivers installed on your system.
What is Fastboot Mode?
In simpler words, Android has this maintenance mode (Fastboot) natively built into it for diagnostic and upgrading purposes. If we look into details, this is a mode designed for re-partitioning the phone, accessing vital system data and manually flashing firmware. Usually, this mode is meant for developers but if you find yourself okay with experimenting than there is no such danger in accessing Fastboot.
With Fastboot, you can easily flash certain parts of or a full system. There are key parts to Android OS, the modem, bootloader and system. These parts can be upgraded or changed manually via a computer that recognizes the phone and has the Fastboot software.
One main use of fastboot mode, ability to flash custom recovery images. Just as the firmware or stock recovery is flashed through this mode, you can also flash a custom one like TWRP through it. This is probably the most used functionality for many Android enthusiasts.
Booting into this mode is totally verified by Nokia and there is no risk of losing warranty. But, if you try flashing different firmware or firmware which aren’t authorized by Nokia, you could end up with a useless phone and total warranty loss. This is exactly why we will advise if you are not good with computers or the protocols laid by Android, you shouldn’t connect your phone to your PC while in Fastboot mode.
We’d like to take a moment to add an important point regarding the use of Fastboot Mode. It is typically used to install phone firmware, but as mentioned earlier, it is also possible to unlock the bootloader of this phone. On Nokia 8 specifically, HMD Global has locked the bootloaders. Hence, you cannot unlock bootloader on Nokia 8 by using Fastboot Mode.
