HOW TO: Root Android 7.1.2 NJH47F on Pixel XL Nougat Factory Image
We have put together a detailed step-by-step instructions guide on how to root Android 7.1.2 NJH47F Nougat on Pixel XL. Please read the complete tutorial once before actually performing it.
Just To Remember:
- This root method is only for Android 7.1.2 (NJH47F) installed on Pixel XL and I am not sure if it will work on the other variants of the Pixel XL on other carriers.
- Your Pixel XL bootloader should be unlocked.
- Pixel XL should be on Android 7.1.2 NJH47F software version.
- Make a Nandroid backup of your previous phone set up before proceeding – for just in case anything goes wrong.
Complete Step-By-Step Instructions:
Step 1.1 – Download Android SDK from the Android Developers website and install. Also set it up with downloading platform-tools and USB drivers package in SDK. See: How to Set up ADB and Fastboot on Windows.
Step 1.2 – Download ADB / Fastboot – Android SDK Platform Tools separate package and install on your computer. Download from the following links depending on your OS and extract it anywhere in your computer.
- Windows: Download platform-tools-latest-windows.zip
- MacOS: Download platform-tools-latest-darwin.zip
- Linux: Download platform-tools-latest-linux.zip
Step 2 – Enable USB Debugging mode in your Pixel.
NOTE: Skip Steps 1, 2, 3 if you already have them.
Step 3 – Download SuperSU v2.82 for Pixel on your PC, if you haven’t already.
Step 4 – Connect and mount your Pixel USB memory on your computer using the USB cable.
Step 5 – Now copy/paste the SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822.zip file to your SD card. Make sure the file is in the SD card / internal storage root (not in any folder).
Step 6 – Then turn OFF your phone.
Step 7 – Download twrp-pixel-installer-marlin-3.0.2-0-RC1.zip and place the ZIP file on the root directory of your phone. After that, turn your phone OFF.
Step 8 – Connect your Pixel to your computer using a USB cable.
Step 9 – Download TWRP (twrp-3.0.2-0-RC1-fastboot-marlin.img) and save it into the same directory as the extracted Fastboot/ADB package files.
Step 10 – Now go into Fastboot/Bootloader Mode on Pixel. How? Press Volume Up + Volume Down + Power keys for a few seconds till you see some text on the screen. This is Bootloader Mode.
Step 11 – Navigate to the same directory now as where you have Fastboot (i.e. Step 1) and on Windows: Open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt). For Mac OS X and Linux, use Terminal to navigate to this directory.
Step 12 – Type in the following command and press Enter.
fastboot boot twrp-3.0.2-0-RC1-fastboot-marlin.img
Step 13 – Once you enter the command, the phone will boot into TWRP. Now use the “Install” option to flash the “””” zip file. This will ensure your TWRP doesn’t get reset to stock on reboot.
Step 14 – Now using your volume keys, navigate to SuperSU-v2.82-201705271822.zip and select it using the Power button. Confirm the installation on the next screen and the installation procedure should start now.
Step 15 – After the installation completes, go to “+++++Go Back” and reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the Recovery menu. The phone will boot now and it might take about 5 minutes to boot on your first time. So, please wait.
That’s it! Your Pixel is now rooted on Android 7.1 Nougat firmware on your phone! Check for the SuperSU app in your apps list to verify.
To make sure you have correctly installed the above root method and it’s working, verify with Root Checker as given in the link.
