How To Unlock Bootloader on LG G5

How to Unlock Bootloader on LG G5

We have put together a detailed step-by-step instructions guide on how to unlock bootloader on G5. If you are used to unlocking bootloaders on any previous Nexus devices, then this should not be any different for you.

Please read every line carefully and make sure you read the tutorial once before actually performing it on your Android device.

To Remember:

  • This unlocking bootloader tutorial is only for LG G5 H850. Please don’t try this on any other variants of the phone.
  • This tutorial has been performed on Windows, but anyone familiar with Fastboot on Mac or Linux can perform this as well.
  • Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding as it will erase all data.
  • You will void your warranty by unlocking the bootloader.

  • LG G5 H850
  • USB cable
  • Android SDK with drivers (How to set up? Tutorial link given below)

Step 1 – Download Android SDK / Fastboot and install all the USB drivers. How to set up? Read detailed instructions here: How to Set Up ADB / Fastboot with Android SDK.

Step 2 – Enable USB Debugging mode on your G5.

Step 3 – If you already have Android SDK, then you can just download Fastboot and extract it in android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory. Create directory if not already there.

Step 4  – Enable OEM unlock on your phone. Activating the “Enable OEM unlock” is necessary for the bootloader unlock. To enable OEM unlock, go to Settings >> Developer options and check Enable OEM unlock.

Step 5 – Make sure you have backup your data as it will be erased. Connect your LG G5 to your PC.

Step 6 – Navigate to android-sdk-windows\platform-tools directory and open Command Prompt (Shift + Right-click > Open Command Prompt).

Step 7 – Now enter into the Bootloader / Fastboot Mode on G5. How? Type the following command in ADB.

adb reboot bootloader

Step 8 – Get the Device ID by typing in the following command. The result will be similar to the format given below.

fastboot oem device-id

Example Device ID (PC User)$ fastboot oem device-id
(bootloader) Device-ID
(bootloader) CD58B679A38D6B613ED518F37A05E013
(bootloader) F93190BD558261DBBC5584E8EF8789B1

Step 9 – Form a single line code from the one you received in command prompt. How? Remove “(bootloader)” from the sentence and also all the spaces so it looks something like this:

Step 10 – Visit LG’s Official Unlock Bootloader page. Scroll down till you see “Start Unlocking”. Enter your LG account details or sign up for a new one. Once in, it will ask you for your IMEI and Device ID. We have already digged out the Device ID, find the IMEI by entering *#06# into your dialer. (The Tool only requires first 15 digits)

Step 11 – Once you have entered and confirmed your Device ID and IMEI. An email will be dispatched with the “unlock.bin” file.

Step 12 – With the unlock.bin file downloaded successfuly, enter the fastboot mode once again by typing:

adb reboot bootloader

Step 13 – Once in fastboot mode, type the following: (Make sure you are in the directory of your unlock.bin file)

fastboot flash unlock unlock.bin

Step 14 – Reboot your phone manually after the flash has completed by typing:

fastboot reboot

That’s it! Your LG G5 bootloader is now unlocked! You can now install a custom recovery, a custom ROM or any system tweak you like. Just be careful with what you do! 😉
