What is Download Mode / ODIN Mode?

Samsung, unlike others, provides phones to customers without locking the bootloader. This allows every user to access Download or ODIN mode without any hassle. There is no need to go through the long process of unlocking the bootloader first before being able to utilize all the features on a Samsung smartphone.

ODIN name stamp is taken from the partner program which utilizes this specific area of the phone via a computer – Download Odin v3.09. After the phone is connected to your PC in download mode, ODIN will then allow you to flash different packages onto your phone. Most popular use of ODIN comes down to flashing new firmwares and root packages . As this program deals with the sensitive partitions of the phone, the most slightest errors can lead up to phone malfunction which definitely no one intends. Therefore, we recommend you use a specific guide or a detailed tutorial rather than experimenting on your own.

With the general updates, you can also use ODIN to downgrade your phone to a more reliable firmware. This comes in handy when a newer firmware causes slow downs, long boots or even crashes.

Accessing the Download mode won’t cause you any trouble or loss of warranty but if you do manage to flash custom files like a ROM or root package which Samsung doesn’t officially intend, your warranty will be void. These custom files are generally those which are created by third-party developers and aren’t signed by Samsung. We think this is the only downside once you try to customize your phone through Download mode and we also warn of this in every post we cover. Android 5.1 Lollipop is expected to come out very soon for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and as soon as it comes out, we will provide you with a full guide on how you can update to it via ODIN.
