This is the time we all have greatly anticipated, Android 6.0 Marshmallow final release builds are now live for download on the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 and Nexus 9. The last Developer Preview was released weeks back, had many things lacking and still contained some bugs. Android 6.0 Marshmallow MRA58K build is here to complete this iteration release and address all issues. Right now, these builds are available for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 6 phones, Nexus 7 and Nexus 9 tablets and Nexus Player. OTA(Over-the-air) update will be starting soon but if you want your device to be updated right now, directly download the files and manually flash them.

This final Android 6.0 Marshmallow MRA58K build brings the whole feature list detailed previously at Google I/O as well as fixes the bugs found in last Developer Preview. The new Nexus system images have also received updates and have been refined to offer better testing capabilities without having an actual Nexus phone. Now that we have the full name, we can expect Android 6.0 Marshmallow being released as a consumer update in the coming few weeks.

Here is a brief changelog provided by Google about the Android 6.0 Marshmallow release:

  • Android Platform Change:
    • Final Permissions User Interface — we updated the permissions user interface and enhanced some of the permissions behavior.
  • API Change:
    • Updates to the Fingerprint API — which enables better error reporting, better fingerprint enrollment experience, plus enumeration support for greater reliability.
  • Doze and App Standby

This release introduces new power-saving optimizations for idle devices and apps. These features affect all apps so make sure to test your apps in these new modes.

    • Doze: If a user unplugs a device and leaves it stationary, with its screen off, for a period of time, the device goes intoDoze mode, where it attempts to keep the system in a sleep state. In this mode, devices periodically resume normal operations for brief periods of time so that app syncing can occur and the system can perform any pending operations.
    • App Standby: App Standby allows the system to determine that an app is idle when the user is not actively using it. The system makes this determination when the user does not touch the app for a certain period of time. If the device is unplugged, the system disables network access and suspends syncs and jobs for the apps it deems idle.
