Bootloaders are a necessary for every Android devices to function properly, on the other hand they also act as a gateway towards modifying your system partitions. In simpler words, you can basically flash firmwares through this mode. As we mentioned earlier, the bootloader is an integral part of Android therefore it needs no installation. All of the steps require to enter Fastboot Mode on your Moto X are detailed below.
Fastboot comes in handy when you need to access your recovery partition, upgrade your system software or even flash certain partitions. Fastboot mode is pretty easy to access but for new comers and new adopters of Motorola, we are posting this tutorial. In case your phone is not detected by your computer at all, please make sure you have all the Moto X USB drivers installed.
What is Fastboot Mode?
Fastboot or Bootloader Mode is a simple built-in feature of Android. As there is no need of it for normal use, it is hidden and needs to be accessed with certain key combinations and commands. Basically, Fastboot mode allows for computer interaction far greater than just transferring files. With the right software, you can flash full system images and even flash/modify smaller partitions.
These partitions namely include the Modem, system (Android OS) and the bootloader. You have full access over these once you are in fastboot mode and fastboot mode only.
Fastboot is pretty restrictive, which means except installing firmwares or parts of them, you can’t do anything yourself. However, there is a unique feature only known to Motorola devices. To access all other system modes like Recovery, you need to first access the bootloader. This makes it important and necessary to know about fastboot.
Motorola verifies this mode and does not discourage customers to access it. You wont lose your warranty if you access Fastboot. Unfortunately, it also comes with noticeable dangers. If you flash the wrong files even by accident, you can end up with a heavy paperweight. We recommend you refrain from connecting your phone to your PC whilst in fastboot and experimenting with it until unless documentation of the process is provided.
