OPPO R5, the phone that completely had us surprised, was just announced earlier today (along with the OPPO N3) at a special event held by OPPO in Singapore. The R5 is another one of those slimmer than slimmer smartphone. In fact, it’s now officially the world’s thinnest smartphone! This race of being the manufacturer behind the world’s slimmest phone intrigues us. Surely you get bragging rights and a great marketing campaign but sacrificing vital features account for that? Let’s see.
The new OPPO R5 is just 4.85mm thin — yes, that amazingly thin! Putting that into perspective, the Galaxy Tab S is 6.6mm thick, the iPhone 6 is 6.9mm thick and the previous slimmest smartphone of the planet, Gionee Elife S5.1 is 5.1mm thick. This is truly astounding. Going below the 5mm mark is a territory we’ve never seen a smartphone go before. A big achievement for OPPO, certainly!
The specifications are very interesting as well, not high-end but great for getting it through. 5.2 inch AMOLED screen with 1080p resolution will be running the show. Behind it, Snapdragon 615 attached with 2GB of RAM and also an Adreno 405 GPU. On the camera side of things, the R5 will come with a 13MP camera made by Sony with a f/2.0 aperture. The front facing unit is of 5MP, totally adequate and usable. Considering how they crammed so much in so little, OPPO is the one to truly acknowledge.
In order to avoid over-heating issues, OPPO claim to have a special cooling element of some sorts. Another thing to focus is how the R5 consists of a 2,000 mAh battery. This is important because as we have seen from other manufacturers, phones are getting thinner but at the expense of shorter battery capacity.
Before we cover this up, there’s an essential thing missing on this phone. It’s the 3.5mm headphone jack. Using a O-Music accessory or a pair of bluetooth headphones are your only option with this and OPPO don’t provide any with the phone, unfortunately. The price is finalized at 499$ without any contract commitments however, the release date is still unknown.
Again, we expect to have a full OPPO R5 review very soon for you all. And in the meanwhile, more hands-on photos of this Android phone will be coming up on Team Android.
