How to Install CM9 Android 4.0.4 ICS on Sony Xperia Play

We have put together a detailed step-by-step instructions guide on how to install CM9 Android 4.0.4 ICS on Sony Xperia Play. Please read every line carefully below. We suggest, read the tutorial once before actually performing it on your phone.

To Remember:

  • This tutorial is only for Sony Xperia Play. Please don’t try this on any other variants of the phone.
  • Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding.
  • This is not an official Sony software update. This is a custom third-party ROM.
  • Bootloader should be unlocked. How? –> How to Unlock Bootloader of Sony Phones.
  • Make sure your phone is rooted and ClockworkMod Recovery is installed.

If you have fulfilled all the requirements above, then proceed to the actual tutorial below.

Complete Step-By-Step Instructions:

Step 1 - Download R800i 4.0.2.A.0.58 EnhancedV2 and flash it using Flashtool.

Step 2 - Download DooMLoRD Kernel (v14) and flash it using Flashtool as well.

Step 3 - Download CM9 Android 4.0.4 ICS and Google Apps for Sony Xperia Play to your computer.

Step 4 - Connect and mount your Sony Xperia Play USB (mass) memory on your computer using the USB cable.

Step 5 - Now copy/paste the CM9 ROM zip and Google Apps zip files to your SD card. Make sure the files are in the SD card root.

Step 6 - Then turn off your phone and disconnect from the USB cable.

Step 7 - Now press and hold the ‘Search’ button and connect your phone to the PC with a USB cable again.

Step 8 - Since you unlocked bootloader and rooted Sony Xperia Play to install ClockworkMod recovery, you should have the Android SDK tools all set up.

Step 9 - Open Command Prompt (Run > type ‘cmd’ > press Enter) on your PC in the fastboot directory and run the following commands:

fastboot -i 0xfce flash boot boot.img
fastboot -i 0xfce reboot

Step 10 - Use the volume keys navigation to enter RECOVERY mode.

Step 11 - In ClockworkMod recovery, wipe data first. Then scroll down to “flash zip from SD card” and press the Power button to select it.

Step 12 - Press the power button again and select “choose zip from sdcard”.

Step 13 -Now using your volume keys, navigate to CM9 ROM zip file and select it using the Power button. Confirm the installation on the next screen and the installation procedure should start now.

NOTE: Repeat this step for the Google Apps zip file as well.

Step 14 - After the installation completes, go to “+++++Go Back” and reboot the phone by selecting “reboot system now” from the recovery menu. The phone will boot now and it might take about 5 minutes to boot on your first time. So, please wait.

That’s it! Your Sony Xperia Play should now have CM9 Android 4.0.4 ICS installed on your phone! Go to Settings >About phone to verify.

Have fun playing with it! If you have any issues, please post them up in the comments below!
